“THE COW PALACE,” GGKC, 2014 – SCRAPBOOKING THE ANNUAL OCCASION

The 2014 Golden Gate Kennel Club dog show faded into memory as the annual calendar soldiered on into spring, summer, fall and now the holidays — a good time to sort through the photos — the same and new of it.  The 2014 weather was almost too good to spend in these cavernous old buildings but better than hauling the foul weather gear for humans and dogs or “our protesters” out front to greet the Saturday morning gate, typically those on a “mission” looking for dogs, old friends or shopping.

As we checked prior years’ photos, the protesters also look like the same people, year to year.  Maybe this is their “annual occasion,” too.

Onward into the concourse where the American Kennel Club now has its booth front and center.   Dennis Sprung, CEO and President is at the center.

This year’s booth featured the Breeder of Merit program but only seemed to have logo items that Breeders of Merit might buy but the booth is in prime real estate that is off limits to dogs front of the concourse.

At the opposite end of the concourse, near the doors to go outside and downhill to the “lower” building, the Golden Gate Kennel Club had a table of its own this year.

Turning back up the southern side of the concourse is the popular candy vendor.  The fudges and rocky road always look wonderful, and the sellers and buyers very happy.

Off to check some judging, and the big surprise: no more center aisle in the main arena!

No center aisle!
No center aisle!

The center aisle dividing the arena and lined with chairs on either side was always the place to seriously watch judging, mark the catalog, meet and greet, see and be seen, and hold onto something for someone in the ring.  In 2013, the aisle was almost empty, so why not use the space for bigger rings.  Times change.

Watching judging from arena stands is a lesson in perspective, visually as well as amongst the distraction of the public gallery.  This year as the supported entry of Chesapeake Bay Retrievers was judged, a boy kept demanding to know when the “real dog show” would start.  Never mind those regular classes and best of breed competition — not a great spectator sport for the public.

But it’s “our” world, our people, our dogs; memories of family, friends and dogs long gone and momentarily, a hint of sacred ground.
